About Our Classes

Strengthening Families Program

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a 14-week evidence-based family skills training program for parents and their children.  We have two offerings, one for parents and children ages of 6-11, and another for parents and children ages 10-14.

Parents and children ages 6-11.  Parents learn tools such as using attention and rewards to induce positive behavior in children, effective discipline, problem solving, and clear communication.  Children learn how to understand their feelings, communicate effectively, problem solve, resist peer pressure, and comply with parental expectations.  SFP has been found to significantly decrease delinquency, problem behaviors, and drug and alcohol use in children, as well as child maltreatment as parents increase their parenting skills.

Parents and children ages 10-14. Parents acquire knowledge about what to expect from adolescent children, tools for effectively parenting teens, and how to set limits and show love during the preteen and teen years.  Youth learn how to resist peer pressure, how to handle angry feelings and manage stress, how to choose positive friends, and parent appreciation.

The Incredible Years

The Incredible Years (IY) is a 12-week, evidence based program (offered in English and Spanish) that teaches parents methods for reducing children’s aggression and behavior problems while increasing their social competence at home and at school.  IY has demonstrated an effect on protective and risk factors such as: an increase in positive and nurturing parenting techniques, effective discipline, parental praise, parent problem solving and a decrease in excessive and harsh discipline, parent stress and depression.

Nicasa

The Nicasa program enriches family relationships and promotes healthy environments that build resistance to personal and social problems.  The program can be adapted for parents of children between the ages of 0-18 and addresses issues common to all parents and a variety of developmental stage issues relevant to the age group for which the class is being offered.  Specifically, Nicasa endeavors to: establish supportive networks among parents, improve child/parent relationships, increase parent ability to balance work and family life, and increase parent skills in preventing and identifying substance abuse problems in themselves and their children.
